Notifiers (like Bloglines ones) are an excellent idea but waaayyyyy underused. notification tool that will learn like a spam filter (Bayesian filtering). Sources would be Emails and RSS and it would notify me only based on my patterns of rejection/acceptations. It would build filter rules. The system could be bootstrapped with explicit rules (user based or community based) but would later learn from my behavior to tailor itself to my attentions needs (not to just remove spam).
Color the notification box based on the hypothesized categorisation that the system applied (ex pink for family, blue for trends, etc...).

It can actually be seen as an application of the generalized Cocktail party effect (ability to focus one's listening attention on a single talker among a mixture of conversations and background noises, ignoring other conversations). See the resulting PubMed search.
